Why do YOU, of all people, need to use a Muscle Recovery Formula?

Not all muscle recovery drinks are created equal.

As you probably know, there is an ever-growing market out there for health foods and specialty drinks such as protein shakes or weight-loss shakes. It seems that there is a new protein drink on the market every single day. Many people believe protein shakes are a great recovery drink after a tough workout or sporting event, while other people use them as weight loss tools or meal replacements.  Be advised – a protein drink alone is NOT a meal replacement… read on…

Muscle recovery is the process by which your muscles heal and adapt themselves to exercise. When you lift weights or perform heavy exercise such as distance running, your muscles form microscopic tears from repetitive muscle contraction.

Hormones called growth factors stimulate satellite cells.  Those cells contain protein, and therefore, amino acids to increase the size of muscle fibers. These cells travel to the site of damaged muscle cells and fuse them together, increasing the size of the muscle.  It’s sort of like stitching a wound together.

Some of the cells stay at the repair site and provide new nuclei for the recently healed muscle. This triggers muscle fibers to make more proteins, allowing those muscles to grow stronger and more resistant to future damage. OH and giving your body some great sculpting, while you can lift all your finds from Target in one trip!

While it’s true that protein shakes can be a great additional source of nutrients in your diet, it’s also important to know which  are a quality shake and which are just full of junk while claiming they are of high quality.  That’s why I am here!!  I’ve tried and researched them all and use the best on the market.

What To Look for in a Quality Recovery/Protein Shake

You already know that all protein shakes are not created equal, so the question remains: What makes one protein shake better than another?

Your body needs all 20 amino acids to make the complete proteins necessary for optimum muscle recovery. Eleven of them can be produced in your body, and nine must be consumed from foods. These are called essential amino acids, which derived from animal sources and soy-based foods.

Most plant-based foods, such as legumes, grains and vegetables, are missing one or more essential amino acids.  So, for vegans to get all the essential amino acids, they must eat different combinations of foods, such as lentils and brown rice.

If you happen to see a huge tub of protein for an extremely low price, you know that the quality is very low and you are not actually getting much protein at all, but mostly filler.

There are several different types of protein out there, and it’s important to know the differences so you can purchase the one that best aligns with your budget and goals:

Whey Protein:

When most people think of protein powders, it’s whey protein that they are thinking about. It’s a dairy/animal based protein.  Whey protein is the most common form of protein and is the perfect post workout supplement to aid with recovery and promote muscle growth. Whey protein has a very good macro blend, usually consisting of 90% protein and 5-10% carbs/fats. Furthermore, whey protein is digested very quickly.

Whey protein will get the job done for most people wanting a good post workout shake. Whey protein is the most affordable of the group, has a great macro ratio, and a solid digestion time. Anyone from casual gym goers to more serious athletes will benefit from traditional whey protein.

Casein Protein:

Casein is a type of protein that is found in dairy based products like milk and cheese, and is the slowest digesting form of protein available. It can take anywhere from 5-7 hours to fully digest, which makes it perfect for overnight recovery.  Casein tends to have high protein with a slightly higher fat content than a traditional whey, but less carbs. For these reasons, many people, myself included,  like to take casein before going to sleep so they can keep their body in an anabolic state during their sleep.  I do have a sensitivity to dairy, but have zero issues with this and it has stopped my traumatic leg cramping (see my blog on that and magnesium).  This protein makes you feel brand new when you get up every day!

Whey Isolate:

Whey Isolate is the purest form of whey protein available. Whey Isolate tends to have the best macro breakdown, consisting of entirely protein and very little fat or carbs (if any at all). Because of its high purity, whey isolate is also the fastest digesting protein for fast recovery time.

Who is it good for:

Whey Isolate is the protein of choice for the more hardcore workouts for athletes and bodybuilders thanks to its very high purity, rapid digestion time, and favorable macro profile.

Leg cramps, foot cramps, plagued by them!! How did I  STOP this madness without going crazy!!

I have been prone to severe leg muscle cramping for years.  And I mean scary, hard core, nasty inner thigh muscle cramps that put my body into a cold sweat and a state of shock.  These cramps were evil!  It would hit for NO reason.  I could not get up but tried my best to move.  I couldn’t breathe, I was soaked with sweat.  I tried stomping my foot, pounding my leg with my fist…. then it would start to subside…and COME BACK with a vengeance!  Many times the OTHER leg would start.  I really felt helpless and in severe pain.  These horrific cramps lasted anywhere from 10- 20 minutes.  Now THAT’S crazy!  I also had hamstring and calf cramps but not nearly as severe.

I really thought there was something seriously wrong with me.

I remember when they first began.  I was having a stressful time taking care of Bruce (read The Beginning of the Last Day) and trying to work and run the Martial Arts school.   Now, mind you, I have always taken supplements after reading the book Life Extension by Durk and Sandy Shaw in the early 80’s.  It changed my life!  I started a regimen of extra vitamins that I still use to this day and I have seen the anti-aging effects!  (and, after all, I AM known as the anti-aging guru!).  But this was a really scary, weird thing.  The first time it happened I felt like someone actually pushed me out of bed and onto the floor.  I was not able to move.  This first one didn’t last long, but as time passed, they got worse and lasted longer and longer – in one leg then both at the same time.

I just knew in my heart that it had to do with nutrition.

Even though I exercised, taught several TaeKwonDo and fitness classes, that was not really anything new for my body.  So, I researched, as I always do, and tried everything… and I MEAN EVERYTHING!!  Banana and Orange Juice (besides so much sugar, that  never worked).  A powdered magnesium supplement that I liked but actually ended up causing acid reflux so, as a singer, I had to stop using it.  I tried mustard packets as advised by marathon runner friends.  I tried anything and everything.  Then I started using Pickle Juice every night with Magnesium tablet supplements and that seemed a lot better.  But it did not completely stop it.  I noticed that it was about 75f% better


I got a really good magnesium supplement, and started taking it about an hour before bed.  I doubled up on it so was taking 1000mg each night.  That and the pickle juice seemed to work really well.  Until, it didn’t.  Then I decided that I would add something new. An all organic vanilla casein protein supplement called Recharge every night before bed.  Not only has this 99% STOPPED my ridiculous leg cramps, but it helps me sleep like a baby!  And as we know…women don’t sleep soundly very often.  I am never stopping this!  It is a slow acting muscle repair protein.  And your body really only recovers and rebuilds during sleep. If you aren’t getting good sleep – TRY THIS! 

I also started using an organic Performance formula called Hydrate.  This is an all organic electrolyte replacement and I feel like I can push harder during my classes and all my personal workouts because it DOES hydrate my body better than plain water (which is what I drink otherwise all day and night).

800mg of Magnesium, and 1 scoop of Recharge every night – 7 days a week!  If I feel something coming on during the day…it’s pickle juice and 400mg magnesium.  But no pickle juice needed at night!

As you begin a brand new year with an unlimited number of possibilities and opportunities, remember to live without toxic people and news and thoughts..remember to give beyond reason, to care beyond hope, to love without limit; to reach, stretch, and dream, in spite of your fears. These are the traits of the immortal – your badges of honor. Wear them with a pride as you make this your kindest, most successful, and exciting year ever

Find a REASON, not an EXCUSE!  Always find room for what comes next!

I believe we’ve all made some kind of New Year Resolution over the years.  Maybe you make them every year. If you do, then you are very aware of the small chance of your determination actually sticking for the entire year.  Even the word might “resolution” sound a bit ominous and daunting.

Statistics report that only about 8% of New Year Resolutions ever prove successful. That’s right, 92% of those well thought out and well intentioned efforts will end up being temporary.  Most of them will have faded from view before the end of the second week.

Share this with someone you KNOW is looking to make a change!

Although those stats might look a little bleak, there is a perfectly good reason why this happens. When you attempt to change something about the way you think and the way you live, you are basically attempting to change the way your mind is already programmed. If it wasn’t then you would have already made these changes.  However, the reason you want to do this now is probably because you have felt a bit helpless in the past to make the change.

Do you know WHY you can do it? …because your mind wants to create happiness, and it will seldom deliberately resist change.

Do the thing you need the most to take care of yourself this year

Whether that means starting off the year with a new hair style, new workout, new clothes, great meal plan, or taking as many hot bubble baths as humanly possible, it’s important to schedule some “me time” to help you feel empowered for this new year.

Writing your goals down each year is so important, but none of it will matter if you don’t feel good about yourself.

This is the perfect time to get your health in check. Talk to a trainer, therapist or schedule that dentist appointment you keep putting off. Whatever YOU consider to be “self-care,” make sure to incorporate more of those practices now, so you don’t feel too overwhelmed with your workload when you get back to your daily grind in a few days.  How about a  massage??

Reflect on your accomplishments from the past year

Think of and list out the things you’ve accomplished and how much growth you’ve experienced this year.  It doesn’t matter how large or small that list may be, it’s important to take this time to reflect and see how far you’ve come.  Remember: it’s important to be kind to yourself. Whether or not you accomplished as much as you wanted this year,  it doesn’t mean that time was wasted. The purpose of your life is to learn and evolve into the person you are meant to become.  Sometimes that means there will be years during your life where you grow and learn instead of accomplishing a dream – big or small

Create a vision board

Find some quiet time to think about your past year and plan for the new one. Pick one or two big things you’d like to accomplish and create a vision board. A Vision Board represents your dreams, goals and your ideal life. Set your goals for each month, quarter and the year, and lay out weekly and monthly action steps that will help you reach them.  To get ideas go here

Clean it up

Clear out and tidy up your work space. Pack away last year’s files and make space for new ones. Clean out your email inbox and electronic files. Organize end-of-year records. Dust, vacuum and decorate to get your mind in a productive state

Get moving

Just about everyone does a little (or a lot) of overindulging during the holidays. Get back in a healthy routine!  Set specific times during the week to take walks or go to an exercise class or pull up a streaming workout.

Make an appointment with yourself and put it in your calendar. Remember that meal planning and prep will put you on the road to success quickly!

Get out from behind your computer

Technology is a great way to network and hold virtual meetings, but try scheduling face-to-face meetings whenever possible. Relationships blossom and more connections are likely to happen if you can meet someone in person.

Commit to a work-life balance this year

Don’t let work control your life. This year, set a work-life plan that will enable you to nurture relationships and interests outside of work as well as take care of business.  Finding a like-minded accountability partner will help you stick to your resolutions while you help each other!

Do one thing you’re afraid to do

While it sounds counterproductive to do something that may stress you out as the new year begins, your newfound bravery can lead you into the new year BOLDLY.  Think about it — the hardest thing about trying something new is usually the moment BEFORE you actually do it.

But instead of holding yourself back or saying, “I’ll just wait until the new year to begin this journey,” doing something that you’re afraid of RIGHT NOW may give you that extra push to continue to move forward and won’t make the new year seem so scary since you’ve already taken that first step.  CONTACT ME to help you PLAN!!

If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, you may have noticed some teasers about a new program that will be releasing soon called 80 Day Obsession.  80 Day Obsession was created by Autumn Calabrese, the super trainer who also created the programs 21 Day Fix, 21 Day Fix Extreme, Country Heat, The Masters Hammer and Chisel and more.  I’ve been able to try the sneak peek to the program through some live workouts they recently did on Beachbody on Demand called “A Little Obsessed” and I can honestly say that the results from the end of this 80 Day program are going to ROCK.  We were working in a completely different way targeting abs, core and glutes. (booty 🙂 )  PLUS, the moves were very unique which is always a game changer!  I’m on a mission to set you up for success in 2018!


This program will officially release on January 15th, 2018 when I will also run an EXCLUSIVE LAUNCH group for my first round of challengers who want to do it with me.  You will be able to sign up for the program and my group on December 14th and participate in “A Little Obsessed” (the preview workouts) with me from December 20th-January 15th so we can start getting our feet wet together.


This program was initially designed by Autumn to sculpt the booty, to chisel the core, and to put on lean muscle to give you that sculpted look.  The program will work your ENTIRE BODY, but there are days designed specifically for your BOOTY, ARMS, LEGS, CORE, and CARDIO besides the full body workouts.

There will be 80 days of workouts spread over a 13 week period.  The workouts are going to range from 45 minutes to 1 hour.  Every day will be different AND you will have the option to do the workouts in REAL TIME which makes it REALLY fun! After each workout is released, it will remain in your Beachbody On Demand for future All Access.


You will follow a specifically calibrated macro-nutrition plan perfectly timed and it will adjust as you work through different phases of the workout program.  Using portion control containers to take the guess work out for you as to how much to eat.  It is slightly different than 21 Day Fix  in that you are eating at SPECIFIC times of the day and you will be eating a PRE and POST workout meal.

You will need to replace 1 meal a day with Shakeology which is required for the group participation.  Shakeology will be used to help fill in the gaps in our nutrition and give natural energy to tackle the program.  It’s my daily dose of dense nutrition and Mike and I have used it 7 days a week for over 5 years.  So many benefits to change your health for good!

My mother was wise from day 1.  I share with you her words of wisdom that structured my life of free will and helping people, of music and strength. Of compassion and passion.

If you can do only one thing in this life…love what you do.
Be passionate about everything you do
Teach what it means to be a friend
Pass on the kindness in hopes that it will make a difference in someone else
Never ever make another person become invisible because it suits your situation or saves embarrassment
Remember that some people are motivated by the darkness and agony in their hearts and not by happiness or light. When others expect this of them, they feel they must always return to that darkness for fear of changing or provoking ridicule and comment from others, especially after they have experienced the feeling of light.
Do not allow anyone to break you because it suits their purposes
Forgive everyone because it will free your mind and in the long run they might remember

Turn up the music – live through the music – the music can save your life. It can take you to the dark and back towards the light.
Sing everyday
Move your body because it will move your mind and soul
Never settle
Never sit still
Find your passion…do not lose it
Then you will never grow old
If you must pace…do it only until you make a path to move forward
Move forward even if you become a moving target
Don’t fall so deep you drown
Speak of your love – they need to know even if it is not returned.

‎Sing for whoever will listen, do one thing everyday that scares you, be sure the people you love know you do, be sure the one who holds your heart knows it unconditionally, kiss, hug, whisper, shout, laugh, dance, and smile. If you can help someone be successful, then do it.   Then you can say you have lived, nothing else really matters.

No one can compete with the past – look back, then move ahead.
You have to close the doors of the past to see the joys of the present.
You have to glance through the windows of the past to see why things changed.
You have to gaze down the road of the past to be able to travel the roads of the future.
You must hold the present and the future in your hands – and don’t drop them, for the losses of the past will teach you to find the treasures and promise of the present and future.
If you drop your treasures, find them again and keep them safe. Only then will you be rich.
Life is a series of choices from the moment you get up – choose wisely and always choose kindness and love.
But if the past is where you must continue to live, then go there and take only what you need to survive – and never turn back and take no one with you.

You’re alive, act like it!
Find your madness, become passionate.
Make decisions that won’t waste your time here.
Hold your people close, they are there for a reason.
Find a summer romance. Especially with your spouse.
Remove yourself from Negativity, you’re the only one who can do that.
Do whatever it takes to change a bad situation into a good one.
Life has no waiting period, so stop waiting.

When it’s all said and done…we will be remembered for our contribution to the human spirit…

The beginning of the last day December 23, 2001

Ten years from the word terminal, a crazy 10 years full of doctors bad and good, full of being on autopilot. That’s how I know for sure, that you absolutely do what you have to do in this life. Now every year at holiday time, it’s  another lesson of self renewal and remembering the lessons from all the time before and the times before that. Remembering the me I left behind.

December 23rd, 2001, Rita was with me, we were observing, one of us on each side of the railing. It wasn’t a sad thing, more like watching in anticipation of what was the next step. And since it was all peaceful, so were we.  “Could you guys do me a favor”? Came loud and clear through the gravel voice where the life support tubes had been. Rita and I looked at each other – He wasn’t talking to us, was he?… Uh No…  “I don’t want to go just yet, it’s not time”. It would be at least another 15-18 hours….After so many hours, weeks, months in the hospitals – it was a familiar setting. But this time things were quiet. No doctors, no nurses, no interns. Just peace, just one focus. Later that week, Judith, who is a master Astrologer, said he needed to wait for a definite alignment of the planets.

Euphoric – lots of speaking to people who were clearly not visible to us in that room.  Lots of joy, and one single moment of clarity with a look to the left right at me, in an ecstatic comment, “I really love you”.  I heard that loud and clear.  I asked, “Is it time to go”?  “Almost”.  Then sometime after midnight, December 24th, “I think I have to go now”… “OK, I’ll be here”.  No more words, just the process remained.  It was not sad.  No sadness was portrayed or projected.  Only a state of euphoria and calm.

5:15AM December 24th, 2001:

One last breath, then after was one final movement. The reach of the left arm as if to take someone’s hand.  Not something random, a definite movement.  The body had not been able to move limbs for days before due to fluid, heavy fluid.  It was simply a voluntary gesture to take the hand of another as if being led. This movement was in the same second after the last breath.

The end of 44 years of music, genius, energy, brilliance, talent, self indulgence, self destruction, gentleness, creativity.  The final 10 of those years, filled with hope, sadness, searching, hopelessness, experimentation, torture, finding a lost civilization, looking for a self that could not be found, inviting the demons in to stay, pain, suffering, forgiving others, forgiving self, euphoria and finally peace.

December 24th 6:30AM:

Making phone calls from the phone in the room because there was only me.  It was deemed sort of “uncomfortable”, or “disrespectful” for anyone else to be there.  But what they don’t know, what they never saw, what they will never realize, is that it was not about them and their comfort.  It was a final understanding of why, what, how, and an enlightenment.  It was a process, and I was the one with the privileges to witness the event from beginning to end.  The longest part were the years prior to 2001. That  December was the month of peace and joy and complete release.  I saw it and heard it, but  how do you put that into words?

Christmas Eve light snow, then leaving the hospital and almost forgetting that I didn’t have to return later as had been the daily routine for so long.  Getting into the car.  Strange wall of calm, lying down to sleep for a couple of hours before heading to make arrangements.  Janet Jackson’s “Shining Down on Me” was on the radio in the car.  The Calling, “Wherever You May Go” was on the radio at home.  The phone rang at 10:30AM, I hesitated to answer, but I did, and static was all I could hear.  I laughed because I knew who it was, I still know.

The wooden Monk casket, the steel casing – engraved with a Martin guitar. The smoke marble headstone, all planned in a single morning with the family.  I knew and will forever know something they will never know or see.  On the headstone are these words:  “most of us go to our grave with our music still inside of us”.  Because the music doesn’t die just because the musician does.

I know what unconditional love is, not just what it means.  I know what it feels like to give and get and I know that it’s really the only kind I understand.   We’re all in this together, we breathe the same air.  You don’t love everyone, of course.  But I do know, even if you try, it all comes back to each of us, better than before.

Memorial, December 27th, 2001 to upwards of 250 musicians from all over the U.S., friends and family.  I made a CD with songs he had requested and songs I wanted him to have.  “Imagine” and “Canon in D” were his requests.  “Angel” was mine because of our life on the road for so many years – 16 years of life in hotel rooms.  The service was recorded as a microphone went around the room and tales of the live musician were told.  Funny stories, feelings, emotions, and it was the celebration of a life.

Living and learning, thanks for everything you taught me, things I needed to know to carry on with this life and who I am  in this life.  Stories never really end.  There’s a long story with many chapters lived before this one.

THEN THE DREAMS BEGAN. Vivid dreams full of sound and color.

I heard my name many times in a high pitched almost pleading voice. The dreams were visions. Visions of getting lost. Visions of Bruce alive, but trying to find the right room, the room where his bicycle was supposed to be. Visions of him being carried off on a gurney, but not he did not realize he was gone. He was motionless on the gurney, but his head dropped to one side and his eyes were fixed on mine – confused as to where they were taking him and why.

Dreams of trying to set up the band equipment, but not being able to get on or off the right elevators. Not being able to completely set up because a keyboard was missing, or cables, or microphones. Something always in the way of completing the set up. Recurring.

All the rooms in all the dream hotels and living conditions had 8’s on the doors – 88, 888, etc. 8’s are numbers of success. I always remember to write down numbers from dreams and look them up then save them.

In dreams, it is said that dogs are protection and numbers are meaningful.

A dream of a lush, green country side, one majestic tree, and nothing but tall green thick, shiny grass and a fence … seeds thrown into the air by an older woman (someone’s mother) and the seeds turned into birds. The dog along the fence in this dream was named Mikey. Dogs in every dream.  Following behind me was Bruce with another man talking to him about me and how to take care of my  needs, what I was like, and how it would be soon.

Then a dream of being inside a high rise apartment or hotel, looking safely out of the window and ice, floods, trucks and cars being swallowed up into flooding and holes in the earth.

Dreams of the big flying dog from The Neverending Story. He was protecting me, standing over me. When his head turned, it was Bruce’s face and voice. He told me something important…I wish I would have written it down.

Dreams of living in a house where monsters were living -either up the dark stairs in a room, or under a floor cabinet. I always went up the stairs to see what and why.  There was always one bright flashlight beam.  In the other house, I tried to never open the cabinet, I knew what was in there, but still I was cautious about everything in the house.  Afraid of going in and out of that house. Recurring.

Dreams of villages and towns and people I didn’t know, but I knew that I had been there and it was all too familiar. Warm Southwestern feel. Recurring dreams. The details of these dreams are still there – in my mind’s eye.
